How to Communicate A/B Test Results to Executives

You have run a successful A/B test. The results are statistically significant. The variant outperformed the control. You share the results with your executive team.

They nod politely and move on to the next agenda item.

The Executive Translation Problem

When you say: "Variant B achieved a 2.3% conversion rate versus 1.9% for the control, with p = 0.03 and a 95% confidence interval of 0.15% to 0.65%."

1. Lead with the Dollar Amount

Every test result presentation should start with the business impact. Not the methodology, not the sample size, not the p-value. The money.

2. Provide Context with Comparisons

Raw numbers need context. Is $34,000 a lot? That depends on the business.

3. Show the Confidence Range

Executives appreciate honesty about uncertainty. A range is more credible than a point estimate.

Template: "Our best estimate is [amount]. The likely range is [low] to [high]."

4. State the Recommendation Clearly

Do not make executives infer what to do. State it explicitly.

Track and present:

  • Total incremental revenue from all shipped test winners (quarter and year-to-date)
  • Number of tests run vs. number of winners
  • Average revenue per winning test
  • Testing ROI: Revenue generated vs. cost of the testing program

When you can say "Our testing program generated $420,000 in incremental revenue this year at a cost of $50,000," testing becomes an obvious investment, not a nice-to-have.

Common Mistakes

1. Leading with Methodology

Do not start with "We ran a two-tailed Z-test with a significance level of 0.05." Executives do not care how you got the answer. They care what the answer is.

2. Showing Too Many Metrics

3. Not Having a Recommendation

4. Burying the Bad News
