Running your first A/B test can feel overwhelming. Statistical significance, sample sizes, confidence intervals... it sounds like you need a PhD in statistics.

Step 1: Start with a Hypothesis
Every good test starts with a question. Not "let's see what happens if we change the button color" but a structured hypothesis:
"If we [make this specific change], then [this metric] will [improve/decrease] because [reason]."
Example: "If we simplify our pricing page from three tiers to two, then the signup conversion rate will increase because visitors will experience less decision fatigue."
A good hypothesis has three parts:
- The change: What specifically are you modifying?
- The metric: What will you measure?
- The rationale: Why do you believe this will work?
Step 2: Choose Your Metric
Pick one primary metric before you start. This is critical. If you decide what "winning" looks like after seeing results, you are fooling yourself.
Good primary metrics:
- Signup conversion rate: Percentage of visitors who create an account
- Click-through rate: Percentage of visitors who click a specific CTA
- Revenue per visitor: Average revenue generated per unique visitor
- Add-to-cart rate: For ecommerce, percentage who add items to cart
You can track secondary metrics too, but your ship/no-ship decision should be based on one primary metric.
Step 3: Create Your Variants
You need at least two versions:
- Control (A): The current experience, unchanged
- Variant (B): The modified version with your change
Keep it simple for your first test. Change one thing. If you change the headline, the button color, and the layout all at once, you will never know what caused the difference.

Step 4: Run the Test (and Wait)
This is where most first-time testers go wrong. They check results after a day, see that Variant B is winning, and declare victory.
Do not do this.
You need enough data for the result to be reliable. A general rule of thumb: run your test until you have at least 1,000 visitors per variant, or until your testing tool shows statistical significance (usually p < 0.05).
Common mistakes at this stage:
- Stopping too early: A result after 50 visitors is meaningless
- Peeking too often: Checking every hour creates anxiety and bad decisions
- Running too long: After significance is reached, more data rarely changes the outcome
Step 5: Analyze and Act
When your test reaches statistical significance, it is time to make a decision:
- Winner is clear: Ship the winning variant. Update your site.
- No significant difference: Neither version is clearly better. Consider whether the change is worth the complexity. If not, keep the control.
- Loser variant won a secondary metric: Dig deeper. Maybe the change improved engagement but hurt conversions. This is valuable learning.
The most important step is often overlooked: document what you learned. Even failed tests generate insights. Write down what you tested, what happened, and what you will test next.
